In Search of the mountain
2023

Where a city is being risen, the mountain is disappearing.”
A sculptural installation reflecting on the journey of a rock in Gurugram, India, the destruction that comes together with progress.

The Aravalli mountain range in India is rapidly disappearing due to urbanization and unauthorized mining. The sand, and stone extracted from the hills are then mixed with cement to from concrete. The concrete is futher cast into buildings to form an urban landscape.

As an artist I position myself between the vanishing mountains and the emerging cityscape of Gurugram, my hometown, to explore the inherent violence in urban development. The formations and embodiments of clay are vital element in my contemplative practice. Clay triggers intuitive remembrance, recording the trace of memory, while in this sculpture plaster is cast to preserve those memories. The result is a ‘column’, an element of urban architecture where destruction and construction engage in an ongoing dialogue, transcending time. This decontextualized landscape invites collective reflection on the constant cycle of destruction that accompanies progress.
